Evidence-based guide

Pace, Speed, Distance, and Finish Time

Pace describes the time required to cover a unit of distance, while speed describes distance covered per unit of time. Runners commonly use minutes per kilometre or mile; cyclists and walkers may prefer speed. This calculator keeps all three quantities connected.

Formula and calculation methods

Pace = time ÷ distance; time = pace × distance; distance = time ÷ pace

Unit conversion

Every distance is converted internally to kilometres before pace, speed, and alternate-unit results are calculated.

Cumulative splits

Each split shows the elapsed clock time expected at an even pace, making it easier to plan checkpoints and race execution.

Finish prediction

A pace-based finish time assumes the same average pace can be maintained for the entire selected distance.

How to interpret your result

Use average pace for planning, but expect individual splits to change with hills, wind, surface, temperature, congestion, fatigue, and hydration. A negative split means completing the second portion faster than the first; it can be more sustainable than starting too quickly.

Limitations and safety

Linear pace prediction does not model fatigue across longer distances. Predictions extrapolated far beyond a recent effort are less reliable. New or returning athletes should increase training load gradually and stop for chest pain, faintness, or unusual shortness of breath.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time per distance, such as 5:00/km. Speed is distance per time, such as 12 km/h.

Why are kilometre and mile pace different?

A mile is 1.609344 kilometres, so the clock time per mile is longer at the same physical speed.

Are the split times cumulative?

Yes. Split 5 shows the total elapsed time expected when reaching kilometre or mile five.

Can I use this for walking or cycling?

Yes. The arithmetic is the same, although the descriptive speed scale is only a broad orientation.
